My infamous speech... Mr. Roboto. It's the speech I remember my RPing 'mentor' of sorts telling me.
There is a problem with beginning RPers... they do not provide detail during dialogue. Now... there is a major problem with this. Everytime I read dialogue without any detail, any emotion, any action... I see Mr. Roboto.
Mr. Roboto is my own version of your character's base all pimped up in silicon and looking like a robot. The problem with this is... when he or she is Mr. Roboto... he or she can only speak in a bland, monotone voice. And when they are silicon'd up, they can't move. They are the Tin Man without any oil.
That is exactly what I see... only the jaw bouncing up and down like Terrance and Phillip. Now... I could always put a dash of life into it... but that's not my job, is it? It's my job to do it for my own character. But when I read other RPs, I don't want to make my own picture. It's my time to chill and relax without having to worry about making more pictures.
How can you prevent this? How can you prevent yourself from being Mr. Roboto? Well... here is what that 'mentor' of mine told me: You must draw a picture for the reader, and then you must paint it. What does this mean exactly? You can put all the basic dialogue you want... but if you really want to make a vibrant scene which people will enjoy better, you must add in the detail.
The greatest way to make this happen is by asking yourself questions... then answering them. What is your character doing now? How is your character saying these things? How is your character reacting? What facial features is your character making to hint us to how he/she feels?
Answer these questions and you are Mr. Roboto no more. And I promise your RPs will be better because of it.
