Earlier this month Matt Stevens had been saddened with the news that the school where he learned how to wrestle, Arizona State University had been forced to cut it’s wrestling team among other teams to trim the school’s athletic budget. It was sad news for a guy that had a lot to owe to the trainers at this seemingly powerhouse NCAA wrestling division. He was their hometown boy, and while there was never really a professional league for amateur wrestlers to go to and compete competitively, there were two options… Mixed Martial Arts, and Sports Entertainment… also known as professional wrestling.
When this news hit the airways ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love could have never imagined the sort of support they were about to receive, not even in her wildest most crazy dreams. It has been announced that a group of supporters, mainly old members that had moved onto bigger and better things, with Matt included in this, had offered to keep the division afloat with an investment worth around $8 million.
This was Redline’s way of giving a little back to the people that made him into the superstar that he is today. It was his way of thanking them and making them fully aware that he had not forgotten them, and that he had eternal gratitude towards them. On top of all of this, being a part of this sort of donation made him look like the golden boy in front of the press in his hometown of Arizona, and thus, would give him the opportunity to run his mouth a little more and draw the publics attention towards his huge match in Chaotic Pro Wrestling at Summer Blast-Off. Sure, it was a little selfish but how could you possibly argue with a guy that was helping to keep your school afloat?
[Our scene opens up on a sunny, excruciatingly hot in Phoenix, Arizona. We are at an ASU press conference, where the ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love and a few select donors, Matt included, sit patiently awaiting any questions that the press may have.]
THE ASU ATHLETIC DIRECTOR; LISA LOVE:
Okay, so lets open this up to the floor. Please state who you are, what newspaper or radio show you work for and who your question is aimed at. Alongside me I have CPW superstar Matthew Stevens, undefeated MMA star CB Dollaway and the school’s long term wrestling head coach Thom Ortiz.
[Where as his fellow panel members CB and Thom were wearing casual clothes, we notice that Matt is plastered from head to toe in CPW merchandise, heavily plugging his match in doing so. It was becoming very apparent that this was going to turn into a publicity stunt by the young star, and we were beginning to wonder where we’ve seen this before.]
ODEEN DOMINGO; ARIZONA LOCAL NEWS REPORTER:
Err, Odeen Domingo, Arizona Local News. Matt, my question to you is why have you chosen the life of a professional wrestler over say, a mixed martial arts career? Pro wrestling, or well, “sports entertainment” has a reputation for being fake and full of egotistical jerks-
[Matt cuts him off halfway through his question with a screwed up expression on his face.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
Okay, Odeen Dom- …Christ, you could have given me someone with a name that I can pronounced… you want to know why I chose Sports Entertainment over Mixed Martial Arts? Well, there’s a bunch of reasons. You want to know the main one? Money. Yeah, you heard me, it’s all about the money, and I have tons of it.
[We watch as the news reporters and radio show hosts begin to scribble down notes on their pads. You could almost see it already, tomorrows news, front page, “This is the asshole that saved ASU”.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
Don’t give me those looks either; I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to watch you guys judge me. You don’t know me, you don’t know the sort of crap I’ve had to go through to get to where I am today, and lets face it, without my hefty sum of money this place would be dead in the dirt. So lets show Matthew Stevens some respect, okay?
[Matt Stevens refers to himself in the third person. He is officially playing the douche bag card. It will beat your Blue Eyes White Dragon.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
I would however like to address the people that think my job is fake. How many of you don’t watch pro wrestling because you’ve heard from friends that it’s all staged? Lets see a raise of hands… okay, yeah, you’re all morons. I’d like to see one of you bitches take a chair shot to the head and tell me that it’s fake. What we do is real, and if any of you doubt that, then I suggest you tune into the local sports channel this Sunday night and watch yourself some Chaotic Pro Wrestling. I’m sure it’ll be showed around it somewhere, I mean, I am the best thing to come out of this state in a long freaking time.
[Redline smirks arrogantly. This had been the first time that he had come over in this way for a while, which made us start to wonder whether he had really changed at all. It was looking awfully like the guy that had turned his back on so many people.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
Watch the Pay-Per-View and then tell me that it’s fake. Watch me wipe the floor with my competition and walk out of the Staples Center the #1 Contender to the Devastation Championship and tell me that it doesn’t mean anything. Watch the passion and desire that each man and woman show when they get in that ring. Watch us put our bodies on the line to entertain you fans and tell us that it isn’t real. I challenge you to try any of those things, and I guarantee that your opinions will be changed by the end of the night… all of this plus man, have you seen the hot ass in CPW? Steffi Miretti anyone? Dayum, they sure as hell don’t make them like that here in Arizona.
[Matt’s serious tone lets up a bit and the room is filled with laughter for a few seconds. He moves the microphone away from his mouth and sits back in his chair again.]
RANDOM WRESTLING FAN FROM THE INTERNETZ:
Hey Matt, I’d like to touch on some of the things you just said. You may recognize me from off the Internet, I became a big star on YouTube overnight when someone posted a video of me sitting in the crowd and talking about my respect for what professional wrestlers do for us fans, yeah, I’m the guy that cried like a little girl… well Matt, I’d just like to say that…
[Tears begin to choke the mans voice, he tries to fight them off]
RANDOM WRESTLING FAN FROM THE INTERNETZ:
IT’S REAL TO ME DAMMIT, IT’S REAL TO ME@!@@!11111ONEONEone.
[Matt looks to the guy sitting next to him with a confused look on his face. He then looks back to the fan and nods appreciatively.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
Ugh, yeah… I appreciate it buddy. Thanks a lot.
DEAN SLADE; WEBMASTER OF :
Dean Slade, Webmaster of MattStevensDot- err, I mean, Arizona Republic News. Another question for Matt, if I may.
[Matt’s fellow panel members CB Dollaway and Thom Ortiz look over to Lisa with a glum expression on their faces but she nods towards Matt and then towards the questioner.]
DEAN SLADE; ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWS:
I’d like to ask you a few things about your new company, Chaotic Pro Wrestling if I may. Now, you’ve made an impressive start to your career over there, you’re coming off two consecutive wins and going into the Pay-Per-View with an opportunity to walk out of the Staples Center with a chance to take Karen DiMarcio’s precious title away from her at a later point in time. Did you ever imagine that you’d be pushed so hard so quickly in your time in CPW?
[Matt nods. “Good question, Dean.”]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
That’s better, someone with a real mans name. No offence, Obama… Odeen whatever your name is. Dean, if I’m being honest with you then no, I never saw myself getting this sort of opportunity so quickly. You only have to look at the history of the company to realize that you have to slowly work your way up to the top from the very bottom, it’s happened to all the greats. I truly believe that the CPW leadership sees something great, some magical in me and thus are basically being forced into pushing me quicker and harder than they have to anyone before me. I understand what this sort of chance means, and I have no intentions on letting it slip past my grasp.
[He stops momentarily to take a sip of the bottled water sitting on the desk beside him.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
I have a great deal of respect for my opponents in my match this Sunday, and I’m sure that you’re aware that if I am victorious in the opening bout of the night I will go on to face Jess Amazing later on in the evening. The winner of that will then face the Devastation Champion sometime in the near future. I’ve heard a few people moaning and groaning about how it’s going to be easy for Jess to overcome an already beaten and worn down opponent, but I want to make one thing clear. IF, and I mean that in the utmost respect towards my opponents as they’re all world class athletes in their own right… IF I manage to pick up the big W there’s no chance in hell of me gassing in a second match.
[Matt points at his former coach Thom Ortiz and extends his hand. Thom shakes it hesitantly. Matt carries on with his answer while looking at his old head coach.]
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
I guarantee that fatigue will not be a factor as this man right here made sure during training and practice drills that all my old teammates and my cardio were second to none. I’m sure he won’t mind in me saying that he wasn’t the most technical coach in the world, we brought specific guys in for that sort of stuff, but man, Thom could run one heck of a training camp. This is another reason why I wanted to be a part of this donation project. I want the future generation of Arizona’s stars to be able to experience and go through what I’ve went through. This state is a powerhouse in wrestling potential, and no matter which route we decide to take, whether it be pro wrestling, mixed martial arts or becoming a full time coach, we all point to this place as to where it all started.
[Finally, a show of class from the young kid. Matt’s words were well received by the reporters in the room, perhaps the new headline could be “This almost-an-asshole professional wrestler saves ASU; likes Steffi Miretti’s ass in doing so!” Okay, so it’s a little long winded… but hey, it’s a second draft, don’t be hating.]
HEAD COACH OF THE ASU WRESTLING DIVISION; THOM ORTIZ:
I’d just like to say that guys like Matthew are a real credit to this fine school. I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t exactly supportive of his idea to get into pro wrestling, but there’s no doubting that he seems happy in what he’s doing, so who the hell are we to tell him otherwise? Matthew, I wish you the very best of luck with your match this Sunday, and I for one will be tuning in to see what goes down.
MATTHEW “REDLINE” STEVENS:
That means a lot to me, Thom.
[Matt turns away from his coach and looks back into the crowd of reporters.]
MATTHEW "REDLINE" STEVENS:
This Sunday I would love it for you guys to join Thom in tuning into CPW’s Pay-Per-View, Summer Blast-Off. You get to see the finest athletes on the independent scene rage war, you get to see some hot ass, and most importantly… and the reason why the television buys will be at an all-time high… you will get to experience the phenomenon that is Matthew “Redline” Stevens making his PPV debut. Please, join me in celebrating my greatest ever achievement, I’ll do whatever it takes to walk out of the arena with my arms raised high, I’ll do anything to bring the spotlight to our fine state… I’ll use any… means… necessary.
[Those last three words echo repeatedly as we fade to black. This press conference had a bit of everything. Matt defended his fellow peers, he stuck up for the business and shot down all the critics, he promoted CPW and Steffi Miretti, gave them cheap plugs and constantly reminded everyone of how great he is. You could tell that things were beginning to get very serious in the Matt Stevens camp, and that he was not going to be the pushover that many people had predicted him to be at the start of the week. Business is about to pick up, that’s for sure.]
