Kidd Love swings the chair and cracks Hyde right in the side of the head, sending him flying backward off the apron. He lands right on his neck on the steel barricade and instantly, his vision goes white. He doesn't even feel himself hit the floor and the sound of the roaring crowd begins to get further and further away. His breath is shallow and weak, the sound barely amplified through his mask, which was falling apart from the war with Robbie Priest and the chair shots from Kidd Love. His vision starts to return, his fingers barely twitching. He lays there for what feels like an eternity, staring up at the ceiling of the Staples Center. As EMTs begins to kneel beside them, each one looking deeply concerned, he couldn't help but laugh. His eyes look around as they tell him not to move. One reaches for his mask and he tries to reach up and stop him, but his arm falls back to the floor. He feels the mask begin to gently and slowly slip off his head.
And then everything was black.
Three days later...
His eyes flutter open, the sound of a heart monitor filling his ears. He tries to turn his head, but is unable to. He tries to lift his arm, but is also unable to.
Hyde
Hey... HEY! WHAT IS THIS?
Hey... HEY! WHAT IS THIS?
He tries to move his legs, his eyes looking around frantically. He knew this feeling. It was like being back in The Home.
It was like he was strapped to the bed.
Hyde
HEY! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! LET ME OUT OF HERE DAMMIT!
HEY! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! LET ME OUT OF HERE DAMMIT!
His eyes shoot over to the door as it opens and an older Japanese man in a lab coat walks in. He's carrying a clipboard and smiles as he looks into Hyde's eyes, noticing they're open.
Doctor
Ah, you're awake! That's great! Tell me how you're feeling.
Hyde
I feel like you're an idiot. Unstrap me from the bed.
Doctor
Mr. King?
Hyde
Ugh... don't use his name. John King is dead.
Ah, you're awake! That's great! Tell me how you're feeling.
Hyde
I feel like you're an idiot. Unstrap me from the bed.
Doctor
Mr. King?
Hyde
Ugh... don't use his name. John King is dead.
The doctor frowns, leaning toward Hyde and looking closer at his eyes. Hyde stares right back at him, unblinking.
Hyde
Are you fucking deaf?
Are you fucking deaf?
The doctor shakes his head and turns to the side table, picking up the phone and dialing an extension. He looks back at Hyde as he waits, looking a bit worried. Hyde looks down at the name tag, reading 'Dr. Toshihiro Matsumoto, Hospital Administrator'. Hyde scoffs and looks back up at the doctor.
Hyde
So you're the head honcho, huh? Aren't you supposed to be making me as comfortable as possible? Undo the straps.
Dr. Matsumoto
Yes, this is Dr. Matsumoto. I'm checking on the patient in room #238. Could you tell Dr. Gregory to get down here right now please? Thank you.

Dr. Matsumoto

Hyde laughs, continuing to stare at the doctor right in the eye. Matsumto hangs up the phone, letting out a sigh as he pulls a pen out of the breast pocket of his coat, writing something down on the clipboard.
Hyde
Hey! Are you going to listen to me? UNDO THE FUCKING STRAPS!!!
Hey! Are you going to listen to me? UNDO THE FUCKING STRAPS!!!
Matsumoto looks at Hyde and stands up off the bed, slowly turning his back and walking to the end of the bed, continuing to write on the clipboard. Hyde stares at him in disbelief, rage building inside him. For the next 5 minutes, he yells at Matsumoto, threatening everyone from his children to his dead grandmother. And the whole time, all Matsumoto did was occasionally look at him and then look back down at his clipboard. Finally, the door opens and another doctor walks in. He was a tall man with short brown hair and a five o' clock shadow. He looks at Matsumoto with annoyance, then over at Hyde.
Hyde
Are you going to ignore me too? YOU FUCK!
Are you going to ignore me too? YOU FUCK!
The new doctor stares at Hyde for a moment before looking back to Matsumoto, looking even more annoyed.
Dr. Matsumoto
Dr. Gregory, thanks for coming down here.
Dr. Gregory
Yeah, sure, it's not like I'm trying to figure out a life threatening ailment.
Dr. Matsumoto
I understand, but I needed a consult.
Dr. Gregory, thanks for coming down here.
Dr. Gregory
Yeah, sure, it's not like I'm trying to figure out a life threatening ailment.
Dr. Matsumoto
I understand, but I needed a consult.
Gregory scoffs, walking toward Matsumoto and grabbing the clipboard out of his hands. Without looking at it, he shuffles over to Hyde's bed, looking down at him.
Dr. Gregory
What seems to be the problem?
Hyde
The problem is I'm strapped to this bed and that fucker won't let me out.
Dr. Matsumoto
It's written down there on the clipboard.
Dr. Gregory
That's why I took it. So you'd have to use your words. You are a big boy, right, Toshi?
What seems to be the problem?
Hyde

Dr. Matsumoto
It's written down there on the clipboard.
Dr. Gregory
That's why I took it. So you'd have to use your words. You are a big boy, right, Toshi?
Matsumoto clears his throat and Gregory looks over at him, a small smirk forming on his face. He looks down at Hyde, looking him in the eye.
Dr. Gregory
Did you tell him what happened? I'm sure he doesn't remember much.
Hyde
I remember just fine. I just don't know how I got here.
Dr. Matsumoto
Why would I tell him?
Did you tell him what happened? I'm sure he doesn't remember much.
Hyde
I remember just fine. I just don't know how I got here.
Dr. Matsumoto
Why would I tell him?
Gregory looks at Matsumoto, taken aback. Matsumoto points at the clipboard, shaking his head.
Dr. Matsumoto
Just read the notes.
Hyde
This guy is in charge?!?
Just read the notes.
Hyde
This guy is in charge?!?
Gregory shakes his head and looks at the clipboard, reading over it. He tosses it on the bed, looking back at Matsumoto.
Dr. Gregory
That's ridiculous.
Hyde
What is?
Dr. Matsumoto
I don't think so. Just look at him. Or better yet, watch...
That's ridiculous.
Hyde
What is?
Dr. Matsumoto
I don't think so. Just look at him. Or better yet, watch...
He takes his pen and stands at the foot of the bed. Hyde struggles to see what he's doing as Matsumoto raises the sheet. He sees his arm go in an upward motion and then he drops the sheet back down. Gregory looks back in Hyde's eyes, then back at Matsumoto.
Dr. Gregory
Interesting...
Dr. Matsumoto
So I'm right.
Hyde
Right about what?
Dr. Gregory
You? Right? Maybe about how many boxes of gauze to order. Move.
Interesting...
Dr. Matsumoto
So I'm right.
Hyde
Right about what?
Dr. Gregory
You? Right? Maybe about how many boxes of gauze to order. Move.
Gregory grabs the patient chart at the end of the bed and picks up Matsumoto's clipboard, looking at them side by side. He smiles and throws Matsumoto's clipboard back down, pointing to something on the chart.
Dr. Gregory
See? You can never make a good decision until you have all the information.
Dr. Matsumoto
I... how is this any different?
Dr. Gregory
Uhhhhhhhh, vastly? Tremendously? Epically? And just about any other adverbs you can think of that pertain to this situation.
Hyde
What the hell are you two talking about?
Dr. Matsumoto
So he's conscious?
Dr. Gregory
Uh, yeah.
Hyde
What the hell kind of question is that?
See? You can never make a good decision until you have all the information.

Dr. Gregory stands next to Hyde's bed, pulling a pen light out of his coat pocket. He waves Matsumoto over, then looks down at Hyde. He turns the light on and slowly traces it back and forth in front of his eyes. Hyde looks at in annoyance, speaking slowly.
Hyde
Turn that off... now.
Dr. Gregory
See? His eyes are following it.
Dr. Matsumoto
That's common with comatose patients.
Hyde
What? Comatose? Are you insane?
Dr. Gregory
Except he's not comatose. Watch.
Turn that off... now.
Dr. Gregory

Gregory turns toward Hyde, looking him in the eye.
Dr. Gregory
Mr. King, blink once if you think Toshi here is a moron.
Hyde
What? Why?
Dr. Gregory
Come on, just do it. I'm proving a point to him.
Dr. Matsumoto
You're wasting your time.
Dr. Gregory
Shhh, hold on! Just wait!
Hyde
What the hell kind of place are you running here?
Dr. Gregory
I'll explain in a moment, Mr. King. Blink once if you think Dr. Matsumoto is a complete joke of a doctor.
Dr. Matsumoto
I know what you're trying to prove, but that condition is extremely...

His voice trails off as Hyde blinks once and Dr. Gregory looks back at Matsumoto, smiling.
Dr. Gregory
Cool!
Dr. Matsumoto
...rare...
Hyde
Are you happy now?
Cool!
Dr. Matsumoto
...rare...
Hyde
Are you happy now?
Gregory turns back to Hyde, taking a deep breath.
Dr. Gregory
Mr. King, you were involved in an accident. You suffered a broken neck three days ago. According to your chart, you were unresponsive when you brought in here. Your neck was surgically repaired and the surgery itself went smoothly.
Hyde
Okay...
Dr. Gregory
Now that you're waking up and Toshi here called me in for a consult, it's quite clear to me what's wrong. I'm sure Toshi will run some tests just to be sure, but here's what I think. I think you have some nerve damage from the break. Extensive nerve damage. So I think you have a very rare condition. It's called locked in syndrome. Basically, all voluntary muscles are paralyzed except for your eyes. You're unable to move or speak.
Hyde
...what...
Dr. Gregory
I'm sure that in your mind, you heard yourself say something right there. Blink once if you did.

Hyde blinks once, his eyes fixated on Gregory. Matsumoto's hands go to the side of his head as Gregory pats him on the back.
Dr. Gregory
Still think he's comatose?
Dr. Matsumoto
I...
Dr. Gregory
Now Mr. King, I know what you're probably thinking. What can we do for you? The truth is... not a whole lot. We can run some tests and look for the damaged nerves in your neck. There are ways to repair damaged nerves, but there are no guarantees. Off the top of my head, there's only been a few successful recoveries from locked in syndrome. I know this is a lot for you right now. But... I don't like to sugar coat. You could very well be trapped inside your own body for the rest of your life.
Dr. Matsumoto
Charles!
Dr. Gregory
What? He has the right to know. Better than filling his head with false hope and raising his expectations and then he slowly gets depressed and gives up. This will make him determined. Or it should. I say it's better for him in the long run. Get him in for an MRI ASAP and see if they can find the damaged nerves. We can figure out what to do from there. And see if you can contact any family or friends or a girlfriend.
Dr. Matsumoto
Uh... sure.
Dr. Gregory
Nice. Mr. King! It was nice meeting you! I have to get back to another patient, but I'll be seeing you soon. Take it easy! Catch you later, boss.

Dr. Gregory pats Matsumoto on the back and turns and walks out of the room. Matsumoto picks up the patient chart and quickly exits the room. Hyde continues to stare where Gregory was just standing, his eyes beginning to sting as they dry up slowly. He blinks, only one thought racing through his head.
He was a prisoner inside his own body once again. Except this time, there was no John. Nobody else's eyes to watch the world through. Just his own and this small room was his only surroundings. He was far away from NEW. Far away from CPW. Far away from Legion and United Abominations.
And Treyna.
Trapped.
Alone.
Locked in.
