The dim light from the hallway was the only thing that game of some semblance of vision outside of the street lamps cracking in under the blinds. Four stories from the street the light it brought in was minimal at best but it gave us just enough to see the silhouette of Gavin sitting on the couch. For as long as he was alive sleep was always an issue but more so in the past 3 years he constantly found himself awake at 3am. And this night was nothing different; maybe it was the reality that he was a few days away from Damnation and a Day and the Elimination Chamber.
Whatever it may be he just sits in the silence of his apartment, only a lone garbage truck outside the only sounds we hear as the camera focuses more on Gavin. Through the dimmed light he sits in only a pair of gym shorts as we see the collection of tattoos and scars he has gained across his body. Leaning forward we catch Gavin chuckle a bit as he looks up to the camera.
“It’s getting closer you know; only a few days out from Damnation and you can get a sense of panic starting to kick in. It’s the type of panic you begin to feel at the pit of your stomach where it cripples you in your spot. The unavoidable realization that you’re on the patch of a natural disaster and there isn’t a prayer or hymn that some bishop could say that can bring safety and solace to you.”
“In the end you just have to bite down and take the oncoming storm and hope that some fragment of your essence can remain after your physical shell has been cracked and shattered beyond recognition.”
He runs his hands over his face and through his beard as he sits back, his head leaning back and to the ceiling.
“Fransico Lopez.”
You can hear the disdain in Gavin’s voice as he leans back towards the camera.
“If there was one person I want to see succeed more than any other person in this match Cisco it’s you. Ever since you joined this company back in 2011 I’d expected more from you; I mean your first match was for the Air Raid Championship. How many people can say the first day on the job they got to compete for gold. You even went as far as choking out the champ; but your drive to make an impact was your downfall because M tossed Kris Slade on top of you taking you out. And to add insult to your poor planning had a ladder thrown on top for extra oomph.”
“While you laid on the ground you watched M win the Air Raid championship. And for the last thirteen years that’s all you’ve really done bud; you make a valiant effort to get to a position where it can make or break your career and you fumble it. I mean you took Amy Zing to the limit and sent her to the retirement home, and I was proud of you. And that’s not a word I throw out lightly because I liked Amy; she earned my respect; and it looked like you had finally accomplished something.”
“You had all the momentum on your side Cisco, you were the Devastation Champion, you ended one of Chaotic Pro’s best wrestlers careers. You fucking had it made; but maybe like Icarus flying too close to the sun you lost it all. Disturbed won the Devastation title that I now hold, you walked into King of Chaos and lost in the 2nd round to Duke, And I see you talk like you have the fight in you, but I don’t see it in your eyes anymore Cisco.”
Gavin pauses for a moment as he cracks his knuckles while looking for the next string of words he hopes to say.
“You went from being Heaven’s Paladin to everyone’s bitch and it pisses me off to watch what once had such promise fall into ruin. But maybe that’s just who you are Cisco, a product of your surroundings coming up short in life. You’re a lot like New Haven Pizza, enjoyable to some but a fucking eyesore to most. Walking into the Elimination Chamber Cisco you need to break this idea that you’re a good guy and become something more. Good guys don’t win championships, Good Guys don’t fight off their demons, everyone must turn a little evil to survive. Even Might Joe Summers has to turn to the dark side and unload brimstone to all who cross his path to survive. But do you have it in you to go to the next level Cisco? Do you have what it takes to cross the line of morality?”
“Because if you can’t Cisco it’ll be your downfall; you may think of yourself as Heaven’s Paladin but I’m the fucking Lich King and I’m ready to unleash a remorseless winter on you.”
Gavin smirks as he leans back a bit, feeling slightly relaxed as he looks at the camera.
“And Kelly James.”
The eerie tingle of disgust sends a shiver down your spine the way he said her name.
“Kelly, I know you’re not even a full year in this company but you have come so far in such a short time and for that I applaud you. I mean you’re not even 25 and in your first six months in this company you’ve already won the Xtreme Chaos Championship. That alone is impressive, I mean in my first six months I was masquerading under the name Damien Alptraum and trying to be something I never was. I was trying to figure out who I was, who I wanted to be while being fed scraps. I had to venture off to Supreme Wrestling working for Tyler Shane to rediscover Nightmare, but more importantly Gavin McKenzie.”
“But that is the past; I will however say that you were robbed of your rematch in a true one on one fashion. I mean we were robbed of burning the house down as the past and the present had a chance to meet. But alas you’re stuck in the chamber with five others and fluking your way to a victory will be a lot harder. There isn’t a way you can shake n’ bake your way to victory, to slingshot past the competition and walk out with the Xtreme Chaos championship a 2nd time. It’s more likely you crash and burn in the wall like Dale Sr. and realize that maybe dreams are meant to be just dreams.”
Gavin leans forward once more, his relaxed demeanor faded as you can feel the coldness in his eyes being to pierce into you through the screen.
“Kelly I know that this is probably the biggest match of your short career here in Chaotic Pro; I mean you have an elimination chamber which is already a monster on its own. Then you have Disturbed, Joe Summers, Lopez, and myself and the idea of you finishing the race becomes more daunting. I mean deep down I’m sure you feel scared and it’s ok, it’s natural to be afraid. I’d be a lair if I didn’t admit the fear I have towards the chamber. But it’s what you do with that fear that determines your outcome; and are you going to let it be the fuel that drives you or are you going to be on empty, watching everyone pass by you while you’re stranded on the side of the road. The future is yours to determine Kelly, I just hope you’re ready to become something, or fall to being just another martyr to your beliefs like Cisco.”
As Gavin mutters those last words we watch as his attention is taken away from the camera and to the opening of his bedroom door. Walking out we see a sleepy eyed Rox walk to the fridge and grabs a bottle of water. Looking over to Gavin she shoots a smile before tilting her head back to the direction of the bed, as if telling him to try and get some sleep. And for a moment nothing else mattered and as the 3am world felt drowsier than it did before. Leaning forward Gavin turns off the camera, the video feed cutting to static a second later.
