"So, uh... Do you know what the Gateway Championship is?"
Honestly, it was a good question.
When we had first seen the card for Symphony of Destruction, we really didn't know what to expect. We'd be competing against each other, as well as against Miss Daisy Jones, for something called the "Gateway Championship." We were clueless what it could even mean, to be honest. After all, all three of us in the match are solo champions, already, and that's not to mention Avery and I also being the current Triple Crown Champions. Offering us a chance to compete for another championship? I couldn't really make any sense of it.
"I'm sure they'll tell us before the match. They'd have to, right? Debuting a new championship title feels like a pretty big deal, so I can't imagine they'd do so without some kind of fanfare."
"To be fair, they literally just advertised it for an upcoming match with no fanfare whatsoever."
"Maybe it's some kind of marketing strategy? You know, to get people talking... Something like that."
Atleast, I hoped that's what it was, but, well... Me being me, I couldn't help but also feel a little uneasy. Listen, I'd never turn down the chance to prove myself, especially competing for a championship, but something just feels... Off, about this. A new championship, being announced out of the blue, with no details whatsoever? That's weird, right? Look, it could just be me always assuming the worst, like usual... But it's better to be prepared, regardless, right? That way, no matter what they throw at us... We're ready. And, honestly, I knew Avery felt the same way. Of course, I knew she was also thinking beyond that, already...
"Hey, regardless of what this ends up being... Promise me something, alright?"
"Of course. Anything."
"Promise me that, if this is legit, you give it your all. No half assing anything, no letting me win. You give it everything you've got. And if you see a chance to win, you take it... Because I certainly will."
I knew she was going to say that. I also knew where the feelings were coming from. They were coming from something that still bothered her, to this day. Something I've tried endlessly to get her to see the truth on, and to stop questioning herself over. Something I really, really wanted to argue against.
I wasn't going to, though, because I knew it wouldn't get anywhere, and I knew it wasn't what she needed.
"Alright. Of course, I promise. We both go out there, and we give this everything."
She smiled, nodding.
"No hard feelings, nothing personal. We just go out there, and we show the world what we can do, even if against each other."
"You've got it."
And, honestly, it was a promise I'd easily be able to keep. She was competitive, for one... But it was more than that. She had never wanted to give anything less than her very best, and if for even one moment, she thought I was taking it easy on her, well... That was something she'd never accept. I knew the truth. I knew she was fretting over nothing, and had been ever since King of Chaos, years back. Regardless, I also knew when to be quiet, and just let actions speak more than anything.
No matter what this Gateway Championship ended up being, we were going to give this our all. We were going to give it our all to enjoy the competition, and to remind us of who we are and why we do this.
Honestly? I think I'm actually looking forward to it, now.
