The video feed opens as we catch the light of the sun shining off the almost clear blue waters off the coast of southern Florida. Not too far from the Airbnb see lounging on a nearby beach towel trying to catch some last minuet rays we see Rox enjoying the change of scenery. Not too far sitting at a small circle table enjoying a bottle of prime we catch Gavin. His hair soaked from swimming in the ocean he sits in silence, with only the sound of the ocean and the dripping of the water falling off his hair tapping the table. The frame remains just this, a stoic man in deep thought before letting out a deep sigh as they acknowledge the camera.
“It’s never fun Robyn having to watch your heroes become human in front of your eyes. And I’m sorry I had to be the one who shattered the illusion for you, but I guess it was better me than anyone else. I mean you’ve been a fan of this business I’m surprised you didn’t see it coming; but then again no one ever sees Drivers Side Impact until they wake up from the rubble and look back at the wreck.”
“But like you I too once had a realization but not with heroes but monsters; because I too stopped looking for monsters under the bed when I realized they were all around us. And tragically whether you want to call it a misfortune or just becoming a product of your surroundings became what I feared the most. I became something to fear in hopes that my own nightmares would go away, that I could find solace in the chaos and become normal. But there’s nothing normal about people like me, when you live life to survive it’s all you do.”
Gavin pauses as he takes his right hand and runs it through his hair and pulls it out of his face.
“And that is really the name of the game when it comes to fights with me, it’s not about winning or losing it’s about surviving. And no, I didn’t say that wrong because this isn’t a match, it’s a fucking fight and I’m coming out swinging. I will do whatever it takes to retain my championship and move onto another day; but I also know that sometimes what I want doesn’t happen. There are hiccups in the road and through all realms I can find myself in defeat; but through victory or defeat I am taking my pound of flesh. You are good Robyn, damn fucking good for your age and for that you have my respect.”
Gavin pauses briefly as he looks a little more serious to the camera.
“It’s not something I say too often so take that as a victory before the bell rings. I can honestly say that if you continue this momentum, you will be a champion as fast as Kelly James was. But before you can ascend to higher standing you need to get through this match first. And I know that you know it isn’t going to be an easy task, between me and the New Haven Handout its anyone’s game.”
“But the biggest thing Robyn you need to remember is to not be afraid of what is to come because there is a chance that things get bloodier then a south beach shark attack. And in that there will be a panic in you, part of your body will want to shut down and collapse into itself as fear and pain become a cocktail to the senses. But the other half will want you to push through the wreckage and attack at full speed and force like a great white. I know what side I stand on when this happens, I hope that you are able to overcome and persevere. Because if not you’re just another victim drowning in the water while the sharks circle and they won’t be gentle and you’ll be gone before you know it.”
On those final words we watch as Gavin smirks to the camera before standing up and walking over to the sunbathing Rox and nudges her on the shoulder to sit up. The two enjoying one another’s company as they take in the sunset as the video feed ends.
